Domo-kun first showed up in brief stop-motion blueprints on Dec 22, 1998 to level the Tenth birthday of NHK's satellite tv delivering. The name "Domo" was obtained during the second display of his display in which a TV announcer said, "dōmo, konnichiwa" (どうも、こんにちは?), which is a introduction that can be converted as, "Well, hello there!", but which can also be considered as "Hello, Domo", and thus is a practical pun (dajare).
